My thumb is dirt (potting soil brown!
I live in Eastern Ma.
.
I went to UMass Amherst and I can assure you they have some of the best horticulture information available.
Several times a year they offer classes through the local Extension services for the public. I recommend those classes highly.
In Massachusetts, we range from planting zone 4 to 6.
You would be surprised how walled gardens in Cambridge and Boston for example stay warm through the winter.
While, my north facing front yard is a zone 4(darn cold!)
There is a book that you will LOVE
National Audubon Society
Field Guide to
North American Wildflowers.

EASTERN REGION

Or go to Mahoneys Garden Centers
Winchester,Concord,Wayland,Tewksbury,Chelmsford, Brighton,Falmouth,Osteville, or Jardin Mahoney's on Martha's Vineyard
 They have a knowledgeable staff.
