What’s are some license plates red and some green in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts
Yen asked:

In Massachusetts, we currently have two colors for the lettering on license plates: red and green.

is it just luck of the draw on what color you get or do they actually mean something?

The green ones are the old ones, the red ones are the new ones. They changed the colors of the plates several years ago. If someone still has green plates it means they have had them for years & probably have been transferring the plates from one car to another as they buy & sell their cars. Or, they still have the same car they had years ago.

Massachusetts never did a plate re-issue when they switched from the green lettering on white to the red lettering on white, so all plates issued to date remain valid.

If you need new plates, you will be issued red on white ones.
