In this essay, I will look at the play “The Crucible”, written by Arthur Miller, the author of other popular plays such as “A View from the Bridge”, “All My Sons” and “Death of a Salesman”. The play was written in 1953, when Miller was thirty-eight years old. Literally, the play is about the Salem Witch trials, which were a series of trials in the county court of Massachusetts, in which over one-hundred and fifty townspeople were arrested and accused of practising witchcraft. However, metaphorically the play is about McCarthyism, a period of time from 1940-1950 in which many American Citizens were accused of being Communists, or supporting Communism. The accused were imprisoned, and thousands lost their jobs, including many Hollywood film stars. I will be analysing the presentation of relationships in three scenes, and looking at who has power, who has pride, and who only wants personal gain.
