I quit my job because I couldn’t stand my new boss?

I worked for this supermarket chain in Massachusetts as a Seafood Manager for 16 yr. In 2005 and in the previous years, I had great performance reviews, but last year I did not have a good one (This was the first time I was rated under-performance). As a result, I was transfered to a new store. My new boss never gave the chance to prove that I could perform better than last year. The HR person even told me that it happened before: “Everyone who comes to his store in this situation will always be an underperformer in his eyes.”
I just got tired of him telling me how much I stunk, all the time. I even asked for a transfer, but he denied, so I quit.

Actually, I asked to go part-time and work for a different store -same chain- until find something else. When my manager-to-be called my former one, he must have trashed me, because I haven’t heard anything about the part-time job.

Question: When I get a new job, will my former manager be able 2 give bad references? Can he do that?
I am actually changing my career. Next month I will graduate and get my Masters in Business Administration degree and want to get good references, since I don’t have any office work experience.

I notice my former boss started treating me worse when he found out I was going to school. One day, he saw me reading a book in the lunchroom at my lunch time and asked me if I was going to school. That’s when I told him.

After that, he changed and sometines told me I was dedicating myself more to my studies than to my work. I never even read my books or did my homework during company time.
What should I write in my job applications when they ask for my reason for leaving?

call and speak with people in the dept. of labor in your state.
there are rules and regulations regarding ethics and behavior on the job.

I am not sure of the law on giving bad references but many companies these days only give cursory info on past employees such as verification of employment, eligibility for rehire status, and dates of employment. Many companies are leary of badmouthing a former employee because of slander issues.

Talk to higher management of your chain. After working that long, they should at least give you a good recommendation. You should also look at other options. You might have to make a career change or go into business. I hope this helps.
    Peace and blessings.

Switching jobs because of bad management is always a good excuse.

Just put on your application that you quit because you didn’t like the companies’ management.

The same thing happened to me and when I applied at my new job they had the same feelings about the former company.

There are so many ways that a company can mess up.

Some companies start off good and get sloppy and make bad decisions.

Some companies get new management and lead the company to a downfall.

Some companies get greedy and fire people or reduce employee benefits so the big guys can get higher salaries.

    It’s business.
