MA was fully forested (open glades, rocky hills, small mountains too). It has several reasonable ports south of Cape Cod, as well as Boston Harbor, which has a navigable river, the Charles. The newcomers cleared land for farming. It was never better than moderately good. There are stone fences all across the state, where farmers picked the (large) glacial stones out, in order to plow. It is a pretty good fishing place, from the coast. And has good sources of water power, which meant it housed many mills.
