It is hard to answer your question because there are many factors. If you plan to feed them daily year-round, it will cost you more but you need less land. And how will they be exercised? Will you be breeding them? Also the land can have many factors. Is it entirely grass or does it have woodland, buildings, etc? As a rule of thumb, I have always been told to allow 10 acres per horse of grazing land. And supplement with small amounts of feed with vitamins. Of course, they still need hay all winter, especially it there’s snow.
On the other hand, you don’t necessarily have to own that much land. Renting land and moving the animals a few times a year may be a great option to check into. Let them graze a field for a few weeks or months and then move them to fresh grazing.
    Good luck.
    Live well and do good.
