I’m currently unemployed and I am pursuing a job. Unfortunately I have a slightly rocky job history because with my last job I left without notice and that was my longest held job (basically my only job) I’m also almost 20 and I am afraid that people are going to think that I am incompetent because I am so young. Well I wanted to put my previous job on my applications or my resume but I’m afraid that if I do, the job I am applying for will call my previous employer and ask about me and they will tell them how I left without notice and whatnot.

Well my actual question is something about what my 12th grade career enhancement teacher told me, and it was that if the job I am applying for call my previous employer to ask about me, the only thing they are allowed to say is “yes she worked here” and that is it, unfortunately I am having trouble finding that online, so if someone is able to tell me the actual information on that, could you send me a link? If not that’s okay.

I would also like to know if they are allowed to say things about previous employees to other employees such as “I would definitely hire you back but (girls name), we definitely wouldn’t hire her again” My friend worked there and told me our manager said that after I quit when she was quitting.

Also I would like to know if its legal for the manager to take sides with two feuding employees and say something along the lines of “that is ridiculous, as soon as we find some new people, she is definitely the first one to go”. I over heard my manager say that about my friend who worked there.

I would just like to get this all cleared up.

I’m from the state of Massachusetts and I was wondering if anyone from Massachusetts would have a good answer to all of these questions.
So, if they are not allowed to say anything bad, am I able to sew them if they do?

I want to live somewhere where rent is under $600/month (I know that takes Boston and surrounding areas away), a low(ish) crime rate and where jobs are better than non-existent.

Also, public transportation would be a good thing as I only ride a bicycle and understand that it snows a lot and I might not be able to ride all winter.

Hey guys, I asked a question earlier about moving to the Vineyard ( http://answers.yahoo.com/question/?qid=20081204145437AAtXBC5 ), and my husband and I are now interested in two things: (1) living on the island while commuting to work, or (2) buying a vacation home in the Vineyard and alternatively settling in Carver, MA where both Boston and Oak Bluffs (the place where we’re looking to buy a gingerbread cottage) are just an hour and a half away.

I know that jobs are scarce in the Vineyard off season as the main industry is tourism. However, my husband and I find the Vineyard so attractive that we would be willing to commute between the island and mainland Massachusetts (perhaps the time required to commute to and from Boston would be rather taxing), but are there any jobs, potentially for lawyers or engineers in the cities close like Falmouth or Woods Hole? Do you think either ideas are good options? Thank you!
My husband would not mind commuting to Providence.
