I’m a college student and in my writing class I have an assignment of proofreading a short story by a fellow student, including story-line errors. In the story one of the main characters is a Detective Lieutenant in Massachusetts I think. There is a homicide/shooting in the story.

What exactly is a Detective Lieutenant’s job? Does he actually investigate a crime scene? Look at the body? Any details would be appreciated.
Also, are they considered high rank, especially if it’s a department in a capital city?
