I started working a minimum wage job that pays $8 and on Sundays paid $12 in Massachusetts. I want to know how I can calculate my pay check ahead of time so when I go to the office to pick up my check it will be nearly close to the amount I expected. On The deduction section, it has fed tax, state tax and fica tax; How do I calculate that?

I will be a junior next fall and I would really like to attend Northeastern in Massachusetts for college. I have a 3.4 GPA but hope to bring it up next year. I play varsity soccer and basketball, I am in DECA (a marketing club) and Italian Club. I do a decent amount of community service and I have a job. I didn’t take the SATs yet, but assuming I do fairly well, do you think that I could get into Northeastern?

I am a recent college graduate with several years experience in fraud investigations. My long term girlfriend is assitant teacher with a degree as well. We both feel that we are being priced out of Massachusetts as it has a very high cost of living and it is very difficult to find a decent paying job. Do you think it is well worth it to leave Massachusetts for NC or parts of Florida in search of better paying work and cheaper cost of living or just be thankful that we live in Massachusetts and try and make the best of the high prices.

I will be graduating in May from Nursing School in Massachusetts and will be taking the NCLEX licensure exam shortly after, but I need to start applying to jobs soon. I have been working on a labor and delivery floor and would like to get certifiied in FHR monitoring, but I cant find any programs that do not require licensure first. Does anybody know of any certification courses that are legit that I could look into?

Quitting a New Job After 6 months–Good or Bad?

Ayanna asked:

I just started a new job in Massachusetts. I relocated from Pennsylvania to take this job. I started this job after having been unemployed for 9 months. The pay is less than what I was making at my previous job. I primarily took the job at lower pay anyway because 1) I have consumer debt to deal with, 2) I was concerned my emergency unemployment would end in December if the Repubs took over Congress, and 3) I knew I needed to get the job experience somewhere in order to compete for hiring paying positions. I was fully open to relocation.

The job is fine. The work is great. My co-workers are great. However, I am not happy. I know most of this can be chalked up to homesickness, but it’s something more. The job is in Boston, and I have to commute more than an hour away. I cannot move closer to Boston because I cannot afford it (trust me, I researched apartments to death!). A roommate is NOT an option. I love Boston and have wanted to live here for years now. I can’t fully enjoy being in Boston because I live so far away. I thought that maybe moving closer to Boston proper would help the problem (even though I can’t afford it).

Now, I am just feeling like I do not belong here in Massachusetts at all. I miss the city that I moved from–a lot. Massachusetts does not feel like “home” to me. It does not feel like I “belong” here. I feel out of place and that I just do not fit in at all. I am now also starting to feel like I don’t really fit in with my new company. Everyone here is nice and great, and the camaraderie is great among everyone, but I just feel like I am “outside” of it. I have been depressed more often than not during the last 2 months, and almost to the point of crying. It’s at the point where I feel so isolated and am so miserable at home, I am actually happier at work.

I started this job in August. I know it is best to stick with a job for at least 1 year. It will be difficult for me to last 6 months at this point. I plan to have a new job lined up before I would leave this one. But is 6 months too soon to quit the job? Or do I wait the customary 1 year?

(Note: The company did not pay for my relocation.)

Sorry this was so long.
