pinkfloyd7109 asked:

My fiance and I are in our 20s. We have decent paying jobs. I make between 60-80k a year. My fiance makes 45-55k. We would like to live in either New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, or Conneticut. The problem is, we are unsure of which city/state would be best for us. We like to be close to a city but have that young small town feel. Also, job prospects are an important thing too :)

Which state/city would you prefer and why?

PS: we’re open minded about other new england states too.

Vermont legalizes *** marriage with veto override

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090407/ap_on_re_us/gay_marriage_vermont

y DAVE GRAM, Associated Press Writer Dave Gram, Associated Press Writer – 2 hrs 1 min ago

MONTPELIER, Vt. – Vermont on Tuesday became the fourth state to legalize *** marriage — and the first to do so with a legislature’s vote.

The House recorded a dramatic 100-49 vote, the minimum needed, to override Gov. Jim Douglas’ veto. Its vote followed a much easier override vote in the Senate, which rebuffed the Republican governor with a vote of 23-5.

Vermont was the first state to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples and joins Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa in giving gays the right to marry. Their approval of *** marriage came from the courts.

Tuesday morning’s legislative action came less than a day after Douglas issued a veto message saying the bill would not improve the lot of *** and ******* couples because it still would not provide them rights under federal and other states’ laws.

Douglas called override “not unexpected.” He had called the issue of *** marriage a distraction during a time when economic and budget issues were more important.

“What really disappoints me is that we have spent some time on an issue during which another thousand Vermonters have lost their jobs,” the governor said Tuesday. “We need to turn out attention to balancing a budget without raising taxes, growing the economy, putting more people to work.”

House Speaker Shap Smith’s announcement of the vote brought an outburst of jubilation from some of the hundreds packed into the gallery and the lobby outside the House chamber, despite the speaker’s admonishment against such displays.

Among the celebrants in the lobby were former Rep. Robert Dostis, D-Waterbury, and his longtime partner, Chuck Kletecka. Dostis recalled efforts to expand *** rights dating to an anti-discrimination law passed in 1992.

“It’s been a very long battle. It’s been almost 20 years to get to this point,” Dostis said. “I think finally, most people in Vermont understand that we’re a couple like any other couple. We’re as good and as bad as any other group of people. And now I think we have a chance to prove ourselves here on forward that we’re good members of our community.”

Dostis said he and Kletecka will celebrate their 25th year together in September.

“Is that a proposal?” Kletecka asked.

“Yeah,” Dostis replied. “Twenty-five years together, I think it’s time we finally got married.”

Craig Bensen, a *** marriage opponent who had lobbied unsuccessfully for a nonbinding referendum on the question, said he was disappointed but believed *** marriage opponents were outspent by supporters by a 20-1 margin.

“The other side had a highly funded, extremely well-oiled machine with all the political leadership except the governor pushing to make this happen,” he said. “The fact that it came down to this tight a vote is really astounding.”

Also in the crowd was Michael Feiner, a farmer from Roxbury and *** marriage supporter, who took a break from collecting sap for maple syrup-making to come to the Statehouse.

“I’m taking a break to come and basically make sure that I was here to witness history,” he said.

The House had initially approved the bill last week with a 95-52 vote. Smith and his leadership team worked through the weekend to try to persuade some legislators to change their minds.

One who did was first-term Rep. Jeff Young, D-St. Albans. He said he continued to be philosophically opposed to *** marriage, but decided that voting with his fellow Democrats would help him be an effective legislator in the future.

“You realize that, you know, it’s a poker game in some ways,” Young said. “Chips on the table. I’m a freshman. I have no chips. If I … had 20 years of chips, I probably could play any card I want. I don’t have that option.”

He added, “It’s the way the political game is played.”

chillihotdog asked:

I want to work part time. I’ve been in the US for 13 months now and have only volunteered in a hospital in massachusetts. I don’t have work experience in the US besides that. I don’t have experience as a cashier or waitress. Is this a problem when I apply for jobs. None of the places I sent in applications have called me. Most of my applications are sent in online so I don’t even have any follow up contacts. Is follow up important for even part time jobs like waitressing?
I am a alien resident so yes, I can legally work in the US.

My mom won’t stop trying to get me to come home for the summer?

reba asked:

I grew up in Ohio, go to college in Massachusetts, but my parents moved recently to Iowa to start a new job. Whenever I go home for break, I have to go THERE, where I have no high school and childhood friends. Last year, as a first-year, I went home as my parents wished, and worked full-time in a job there. It was probably the most miserable summer of my life. The people of Iowa are very nice, but I knew no one, and my 3.5 months revolved around my boring family and even more boring work. We live in a college town, so all the students had gone home. I missed my boyfriend and friends back in Boston like I’ve never missed anything before. I told my mom that after that ordeal, I would never do it again. I would instead apply for internships and jobs on campus or elsewhere, where my friends could be.

The predicament is, I’m home for Christmas now, and she won’t stop suggested that I apply for certain things in IOWA, so I could live at home again for 3.5 months. How can I stop this?
I know it’s because she loves me, but she needs to learn to let go of me! What is the best way I can do this without hurting her? I know I already have hurt her a few times by almost blowing up on her.

Tracking Your Taxes: Defense Bill Pays for Prostate Screenings, Sprinkler System

By William La Jeunesse and Laura Prabucki

– FOXNews.com

Just last week, Obama broke a promise to veto pork-barrel bills as he signed into law the 2010 Defense Appropriations Bill — a $636 billion behemoth loaded with $4.2 billion dollars of pork.
President Obama pledged in August to cut all pork barrel projects from defense spending, threatening to veto any swollen bills that came across his desk — a pledge shattered by nearly 2,000 pet projects that have made their way into the defense budget.

“If a project doesn’t support our troops, we will not fund it,” he said to a meeting of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Phoenix. “If a system doesn’t perform, we will terminate it. And if Congress sends me a defense bill loaded with that kind of pork, I will veto it. ”

Just last week, Obama broke his promise as he signed into law the 2010 Defense Appropriations Bill — a $636 billion behemoth loaded with $4.2 billion of pork.

“We should be concerned that we’re getting ripped off,” said Ryan Alexander, president of the watchdog group Taxpayers for Common Sense.

“The earmarking process is the beginning of figuring out whether or not we’re getting ripped off. Absolutely dollars are being directed, not based on the best decision making process.”

In all, Congress added in 1,720 pet projects, including:

∙$5 million for a visitors center in San Francisco
∙$23 million for indigent health care in Hawaii
∙$18 million for the Edward Kennedy Policy Institute in Massachusetts
∙$1.6 million to computerize hospital records in Oakland
∙$47 million for anti-drug training centers around the country
∙$20 million for the World War II Museum in Louisiana
∙$3.9 million grant to develop an energy-efficient solar film for buildings
∙$800,000 for minority prostate cancer research
∙$3.6 million for marijuana eradication in Kentucky
∙$2.4 million for handicap access and a sprinkler system at a community club in New York

Lawmakers also added $5 billion for two destroyers, 10 C-17 cargo planes and to develop a jet engine the Pentagon neither wants nor needs. Critics call it classic pork — projects that may save jobs, but not money.

“There is a reason they are added to the Defense appropriations bill, because everyone in Congress knows this is a must-pass piece of legislation”, said Todd Harrison, a budget studies fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments.

Despite the billions in pork, the White House says it’s making progress. The earmarking total is 14 percent lower than it was on last year’s defense bill, and the Obama administration says federal agencies found more than $19 billion in contract savings for 2010. The president has also succeeded in killing funding for the pricy F-22 Joint Strike Fighter and a new presidential helicopter.

Members of Congress are also defending their earmarks. Senator John Kerry, D-Mass., who added the Ted Kennedy Institute to the defense budget, says it is a tribute to the late Senator’s leadership on military technology and safety for our troops.

Senator Mary Landrieu, D-La., says she was “proud” to secure $20 million for a new wing of the National World War II museum in her home state.

But a study by the Center of Defense Information says earmarks like those in this bill — including those for the solar film, prostate cancer research, and the New York sprinkler system — mean less money for pilot training, supplies, repairs and ammunition.

Harrison is especially disappointed Congress cut $300 million from a successful counterinsurgency program used by Army field commanders.

“That money is used by commanders on ground in Iraq and Afghanistan to fund small projects that help win over the local population,” he said.
I know that you liberals are watching this! Go ahead and answer my question! Oh, that’s right, you only do personal attacks when confronted with facts.

Employee Background Check?

Patrick D asked:

I am a senior in college and I recently received a job offer from a good insurance company in Boston. Over the summer, I was arrested for domestic assault and battery but the whole situation was exaggerated, my parents never pressed charges, and the case was “generally continued” in Massachusetts. That basically means it goes away in six months (Feb. ’09). In September, I was arrested for public intoxication at a football game and entered a pretrial diversion program. I paid the fees and did the community service and the case was dismissed. I was never convicted of anything, and I never had to lie on my job application, but I am worried about the results of the background check. Do you think I will lose my job offer?
